When fishing on the Owyhee River, you will find a lot of impressively sized brown trout if you venture down to the lower Owyhee, near the Idaho border. If you go a little closer to the dam, you can usually expect to find some smaller sized Rainbows that are still relatively fat in comparison to other places that you can find rainbow trout. There are also carp in the river, so you may get a few of them along with your trout. It is just one of the things people love about fly fishing on the Owyhee River.
When Fishing is Best
Fishing is allowed all year long on the Owyhee, but during the summer, the dam is lifted to allow more water to flow and this can raise the water levels quite a bit, depending on your location along the river. There are also some who say that you should avoid fishing between October and December since the brown trout will be spawning at this time.
Enjoying Your Catch
Brown trout are protected here. You cannot keep the browns that you catch. However, this does not mean that they are not enjoyable to catch. Most of the fish here are larger than 18-in. They are also fighters. They will put up an impressive fight at all times. Therefore, most people do not mind having to toss back a big one for the next guy.
